50 Things

In no particular order, 50 things about me:

  1. I am the oldest grandchild on both sides of my family.
  2. My favorite classes in school were Shakespeare (high school), Sociology of Marriage & the Family (college), and Law & Religion (law school).
  3. I love taking pictures.
  4. One of the best gifts I ever received was my Cabbage Patch Kid, Marlena, for my sixth birthday.
  5. I am an eternal optimist and tend to believe the very best about people. Sometimes I worry that being a family law attorney will rob me of this.
  6. My favorite candies are Hot Tamales and candy corn. I don’t really like any other kinds of candy.
  7. I was engaged once before meeting my husband. Exactly one year to the day after I called off my wedding to the first guy, I kissed my now-husband.
  8. I love cardigans and ballet flats. I probably get mistaken for a school librarian at times.
  9. I cry piteously at TV commercials and children’s books, but can remain stoic during court hearings about child abuse and neglect. I kind of understand why this is, but it still feels strange.
  10. Whenever I hear a piece I’ve played on the cello, my hands start moving to recreate the fingerings and bowings.
  11. I really, really, really miss my brother and my friend Emilie.
  12. I misspelled the word ‘fairway’ in the fourth (I think) grade spelling bee. I cried for days.
  13. I have a not-so-secret fascination with the Mafia. I’m not sure why.
  14. I used to live about four blocks away from one of John Dillinger’s hideouts in St. Paul, Minnesota. I think this is terribly thrilling.
  15. My favorite composers are J.S. Bach, Brahms, Palestrina, and Vaughan Williams.
  16. I could eat Chipotle burritos and Culver’s frozen custard every day. Fortunately for me, neither of those things exist in New Mexico.
  17. I used to have a hard time making female friends. This changed when I went away to music camp in high school. Ever since I’ve been fortunate to have some of the very best girlfriends in the whole world.
  18. I love entertaining and throwing parties.
  19. Although I love travelling with my husband and am sure there are many fulfilling family trips in my future, the St. Olaf Orchestra’s tour of Eastern Europe is still the most memorable travel experience I’ve ever had.
  20. I have worn glasses since first grade and contact lenses since sixth grade.
  21. I love being Lutheran. However, sometimes I think that if I weren’t Lutheran, I would be Jewish.
  22. My favorite movies are Love Actually, The Godfather Part II, You’ve Got Mail, and Primal Fear.
  23. My favorite color is red. Or pink. Or orange.
  24. I have a very hard time picking just one favorite anything.
  25. In a related story, I once dated three guys at the same time. (None of them were my husband, in case you were wondering.)
  26. I get very excited every November when Starbucks reintroduces their holiday Red Cup.
  27. If I could redo college, I’d probably major in sociology/anthropology instead of English.
  28. I hate clutter, but am very sentimental and have a hard time throwing anything anyway.
  29. Consequently, I love storage containers. I sometimes even buy containers before I know what I’m going to put in them.
  30. My favorite books are the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery. My favorite book within the series varies depending on what phase of life I’m in, but if I had to choose I would pick Anne of the Island.
  31. I love the season of Advent.
  32. I think my personality is a somewhat curious blend of Miranda and Charlotte.
  33. I inherited my mother’s love of dishes and table linens. And purses.
  34. I really want to learn how to sew. I can knit, but only when I’m doing it with my friend Jenia. Otherwise I can’t remember how.
  35. Even though it isn’t very feminist of me, I absolutely love Disney movies and Disneyland.
  36. I love the smell of gasoline because it reminds me of childhood road trips to Wisconsin.
  37. I love reading to my daughter, and can’t wait until she is old enough for the Little House on the Prairie books, the Anne books, and the Harry Potter books.
  38. The most beautiful place I’ve ever been is Mont-St-Michel in Normandy, France, in June 1998. Upon arrival, I promptly got stuck in quicksand. If you think I’m being dramatic, just ask my friend Emily. She was there.
  39. Even though it is softer and heavier than it used to be, I like my body a lot better since having a baby.
  40. I really miss my grandmothers’ raspberry pie and rolled date cookies.
  41. I religiously attended water aerobics classes for a year and miss them.
  42. My favorite cities are London, New York, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Chicago, and Santa Fe.
  43. Evening Prayer at Lutheran Summer Music is one of my favorite places to be in all the world.
  44. My heritage is three-quarters Norwegian and one-quarter German.
  45. I never had cats until we got our kittens Luke and Leia in July 2005. I am now unabashedly a cat person and was afraid for a long time that I would never love a human child as much as I love them. (I was wrong. But I still adore them.)
  46. I dream of living in a brownstone on the Upper West Side. Or a farmhouse in the country. Or on Prince Edward Island. If only there were more time. And money.
  47. I think Pitocin is the ickiest substance known to womankind.
  48. I want to travel to England, Norway, and Italy with my husband some day.
  49. My thirties are my favorite decade so far. Since I used to be afraid that life was all downhill after college, this is really saying something.
  50. The three things I’m most proud of in my life are playing in the St. Olaf Orchestra, passing the bar exam, and being Anna’s mama.
